CRUCIAL STUDY DELIVERS MIXED SCORECARD FOR ENGLISH DRUG TREATMENT SERVICES
For drug treatment in England, studies do not get any more important than this - the first national
reassessment for over 10 years. A year after starting treatment, drug use, crime and health risk
behaviour were all down, but quality of life gains were minor compared to treatment costs, and the
study showed how far patients and services were from achieving national reintegration objectives.

US EXPERTS SAY ALCOHOL TAX RISES ARE AN IMPORTANT PUBLIC HEALTH MEASURE
At the time high on the UK pre-election policy agenda and now government policy, the tactic of
controlling drinking by increasing prices was endorsed by a national US panel of experts as a major
public health measure to curb excessive alcohol use and related harms. Nevertheless, some

US TASK FORCE SAYS CUTTING ALCOHOL OUTLETS IMPROVES PUBLIC HEALTH
The review which led a national US task force to recommend limiting the concentration of retail
alcohol outlets as an important public health measure to curb excessive alcohol use and related
harms. In much of the UK though, licensing law severely limits the scope for action.

ALCOHOL HEALTH SERVICES IN ENGLAND: GLASS UNDER HALF FULL BUT BEING TOPPED UP
Official audit of work by the Department of Health and NHS to address the health effects of alcohol
misuse. Describes a system whose infrastructure is clearly inadequate compared to the size of the
task, but one recently taking steps in the right direction. How far it has to go is illustrated by
the gap between the pounds spent on treatment per dependent drinker versus drug user: 197 v. 1744.
