Dear Tim,
I venture to propose 'The Biggest Liar in Asia'
(http://www.kipling.org.uk/biggestliar.htm ). Though it is not about
publishing activities directly, it has some advantages: it's short and
infrequent; one may play up uncertainty with the very person of the
Biggest Liar in Asia and his protagonist; and its content may be felt
a bit teasing in such a Company.
(Disclaimer: I do not know what is this Worshipful Company like).
With my best wishes,
Yan
CT> Dear All
CT> I am in the process of organising a Kipling evening for the
CT> Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers
CT> and would like to draw on the collective intellectual firepower
CT> of the KipSoc web-list to help with a few ideas:
CT> a) We are planning to have a tabla and sitar player at the start
CT> of the evening. Any ideas for any other musical interludes, and
CT> are there any performers that you could recommend?
CT> b) We would like to have a 30-45 minute performance on the life
CT> and work of Kipling, looking in particular at his record as a newspaperman.
CT> (He was, of course, an Hon. Freeman and Liveryman of the Stationers' Company.)
CT> In that context, has anyone seen Jonathan Jones perform? I see from his website
CT> that he does a one-man show based on the life of Kipling.
CT> c) In particular, are there any appropriate poems or songs that could be recommended?
CT> I have in mind sections of "Something of Myself" (especially the time in India
CT> and bits on the daemon). I have also thought of "The Man who could write", "The Gods
CT> of the Copybook Headings", the start of "The Man who would be King",
CT> and perhaps the 6 Honest Serving Men, not to mention the opening of "A
CT> Matter of Fact" for starters.
CT> d) Regarding the menu, we will have mini-samosas, bhajis etc as tasters,
CT> with curried eggs (as in "Without Benefit of Clergy"); roast beef as in The Roast
CT> Beef of Old England ("Three and an Extra") and strawberry water ice, which I'm
CT> sure appears somewhere but can't find.
CT> d) I have forgotten to mention chota pegs, belait pani and India Pale Ale.
CT> All, or any, ideas, would be more than welcome!
CT> Best wishes
