Subject: Open Exeter project report on Data Asset Framework survey
Apologies for cross-posting
****************************************
Members of the list may be interested in the Open Exeter (funded under the JISC Managing Research Data Programme) project report on a recent Data Asset Framework (DAF) survey. The survey was adapted from the Data Curation Centre’s Data Asset Framework methodology, and comprised an online questionnaire and a series of follow up interviews. The report can be found at our institutional repository, ERIC: http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3689 You can also get to it from our blog: http://blogs.exeter.ac.uk/openexeterrdm/
The survey aimed to gather information about research data management practice and attitudes to Open Access across the University: how researchers created data, where they stored their data, whether they backed up their data and what happened to their data when the project was finished. As with similar surveys conducted by other HEIs the survey was open to PGR students as well as academic staff.
The survey attracted 284 responses and follow up interviews have been conducted with over 60 academics and professional services staff both within the University’s central services and individual colleges (IT, Research and Knowledge Transfer, Research Accounting and Finance Teams, College Research Managers and College/departmental Computer Development Officers). The 284 survey respondents included all types of researcher from PGR students to professors.
The survey was intended to help us better understand current research data management practice across different disciplines and within different levels of research experience and findings will inform the development of policy, governance, skills training and future sustainability of research data management at Exeter. As a result of high level engagement with the local research community, through Associate Deans and Directors of Research, the survey attracted a high response rate (relative to other HEIs); this gives confidence on the headline conclusions of this report.
It would be great to get some feedback or comments on the report. Equally, we are happy to answer any queries arising from the report.
Many have commented on the high survey response rate – this was due to sheer hard work and relentless promotion! We’re documenting how we went about survey promotion for the DCC and a short case study should be available from their web site very soon.
Best wishes
