Network Co-ordinator for Digital Economy
Computational Systems Chemistry
Location: Highfield Campus
Salary: £27,578 to £33,884
Full Time Fixed Term
Closing Date: Wednesday 29 August 2012
Interview Date: To be confirmed
Reference: 149612EB

The RCUK Digital Economy Programme Theme has identified four challenge areas of which IT as a Utility is one. We have recently been awarded a Network+ grant to promote the ITaaU challenge area.

We wish to appoint a suitably qualified Network Co-ordinator (NC) for the Digital Economy (DE) challenge area, IT as a Utility Digital Economy (ITaaU) Network+. The University of Southampton, along with the partner Universities, has a very strong reputation in Digital Economy research, as well as e-Science and ICT in general. Digital Economy forms one of the University of Southampton's Strategic Research Groups (USRG).

The Network Co-ordinator will be responsible for the co-ordination of network activities, including network organisation, outreach and community engagement, community and specialist workshops, sandpits, secondments and pilot project organisation, and other activities necessary for the efficient running and growth of an active network providing the research community with a way to exchange and evolve ideas within the ITaaU area.

In addition to the co-ordination of the network and help with the management of the network, it is intended to run the network itself as an example of using IT as a Utility and the Network Co-ordinator will be involved in empirical research based on the network activities as a research example of ITaaU.

The network co-ordinator will be based at the University of Southampton and will be required to work with the other network investigators (based at QMUL, Nottingham and Belfast).

The position is available immediately at a salary level of £27,578 (ERE level 4) and is available as a full time position. However, part time / job share options would be possible, depending on experience. Funding for this position is available until March 2015. Travel away from Southampton will be necessary as will some overnight visits. The role may also involve international travel.

The ideal applicant will have at least a moderate technical background with a user and social dimension, with a PhD or comparable industrial or applied experience in a science, social science or technical area. Experience in organising events such as workshops, conferences, sandpits, as well as helping to run, develop and publicise group activities is highly desirable along with excellent social and networking skills.
