Beach Views
(West St Kilda, Port Phillip Bay)
The lunch we had
looking towards the beach
I shan't describe -
it'd have you
salivating
at your keyboard.
The view we had
was worth the hour -
a wide clean strand,
a waveless low tide,
a cluster of pleasure craft
moored in the lee of the pier;
cafe patrons on the decking,
kids and dogs running
dancing prancing wrestling.
We pay and leave, pick up
leaflets from the board-sports
shop that shares the pavilion.
Back home, I search their site
(What sports are you into?
Kiteboarding Windsurfing
Stand Up Paddle, Skate/Scoot):
they have a webcam
trained on the beach
twentyfour-seven! panning
slowly left, right, back. What's
on it now? the view we had -
with strollers at dusk now,
lights coming on far over
at Williamstown
and on the West Gate Bridge;
a light cloud cover,
on the bay horizon
a strip of golden light.
Next morning a tractor
sifting the wide strand.
Views we now have
twentyfour-seven.
