She was there
I now hear
with her corporate son
in the stand
commanding
a view of the tape
when the fastest races were run.
If I'd been idly watching
I'd have seen a blur
that was her
the keen sports-watcher
excited - both applauding
victors, and feeling
for the defeated.
All I saw was the tv-
news summary -
and that sadly
focussed on how badly
Our Team went
and their and our
disappointment.
Had I been there
and found her face
I might have ignored
every record-breaking
legend-making race
rapt in her animated intentness
on more than mere winners -
runners-up, also-rans -
careless myself who lost or won
but a little envious of her son.
