Marketing libraries: strategic and creative communications for information professionals
A full day event organised by the Career Development Group North Eastern Division, this course is aimed at library and information professionals from all sectors interested in communications and marketing. Covering strategic and practical elements, the event will discuss developing effective marketing plans and guidelines, and implementing these within your library.

09:30 – 10:00 Arrival, registration and refreshments
10:00 – 12:30 Kay Grieves: ‘How do you like your eggs in the morning? : a simple 7 step toolkit for creating strategic marketing plans that really work.’
In this workshop, Kay Grieves (University of Sunderland) will present a strategic marketing toolkit which enables library and information professionals to consider their service offer to different customer groups and develop their own marketing plans.

13:00 – 13:20 Optional tours of the Main Library’s Level 2 refurbishment and East Wing extension
13:30 – 14:15 Luke Burton: ‘Tweets, Likes and Links: Social Media Marketing for Libraries.’
Luke Burton (Newcastle City Library) trains new businesses in social media marketing. His session will introduce key social media terms and concepts, as well as exploring best practice.
14:15 – 15:00 Helen Thornber: ‘Consistency and creativity: using your brand to create professional marketing on a budget.’
Helen Thornber from Mariposa Development will share her branding and marketing experience with libraries and small businesses, to discuss how you can use your brand guidelines consistently to create promotional materials that look great, on a small budget and without having to sacrifice creativity.

15:15 – 16:00 Antonio Jimenez-Milian: ‘Going upmarket: private banks, Italian handbags... and small libraries.’ In his presentation, Antonio Jimenez-Milian (York Minster Library) will consider marketing small, specialised libraries and propose that by focussing on your strengths, your library can become a place to "belong", not just a place to "visit".
16:00 – 16:15 Round up, final questions and close
Venue: The event will be based in the Seminar Room, Level 4, Main Library, Durham University Library. There is good disabled access to the library and meeting room (Access Codes – E, W, G).
