Thanks to Jean-Michel for identifying the root cause!
A Google search for "linux sudo nsswitch.conf" shows that this problem
also hit other people. I have asked SLC Support to endeavor to have
this issue documented and fixed.
In the meantime we probably need to do a broadcast...
