Dear Colleagues,
RNIB has recently published research which explored the barriers and
enablers that affect access to primary and secondary eye care services
for communities particularly at risk of avoidable sightloss across the
UK.
Research findings are available at:
http://www.rnib.org.uk/professionals/health/research/Pages/research_poli
cy.aspx
Almost 2 million people are living with sight loss in the UK. 50 per
cent of this sight loss is due to preventable or treatable causes.
Several groups are at an increased risk of losing their sight
unnecessarily. South Asian communities have an increased risk of
diabetes and consequently diabetic eye conditions, including diabetic
retinopathy, and Black African and African-Caribbean groups have an
increased risk of developing glaucoma. In addition, people living in
socio-economic deprivation are less likely to access primary eye care
services and are therefore at a greater risk of avoidable sight loss.
RNIB commissioned the independent research organisation Shared
Intelligence to undertake qualitative research into the barriers and
enablers that affect access to primary and secondary eye care services
to inform the development of five pilot studies trialling interventions
to reduce avoidable sightloss.
Eye health equity profiles were also undertaken to inform the pilot
projects and De Montfort University was commissioned to undertake a
review of the evidence relating to the causes of inequalities in eye
health, and interventions to reduce inequalities, with particular
reference to ethnicity, age, and socio-economic deprivation.
More information about this programme of work; the equity profiles;
evidence review and interventions being trialled is available at:
