The Research Center for East European Studies (Forschungsstelle Osteuropa, FSO) houses an internationally unique archive of samizdat-documents and personal archives documenting the social and cultural developments in Eastern Europe since 1945. As an independent research institute attached to the University of Bremen the FSO works closely with the Department of History and offers classes in the latter’s BA and MA programs.
The appointees are to base their research on sources from the FSO archive. Research in history, cultural and literary studies is equally welcome while projects crossing the 1989 caesura and enabling a dialogue with political sciences are of special interest.
The candidates should have a strong record in cultural history/cultural studies with a strong conceptual foundation and excellent command of either Polish or Czech or Slovak or Hungarian. Knowledge of further Slavic languages is an advantage.
The ideal candidates are internationally well-connected, have international research experience, a record of archival research and experience with fund raising. They should be willing to raise funding for the development and research of the FSO archive in close cooperation with the FSO directorate; the close cooperation with the FSO is indispensable aspect of the positions on offer.
Besides the general requirements for a civil service position the following is required:
- a university degree in the one of the fields in question
- an excellent PhD thesis; applicants for the W1-position should have defended their PhD within the last five years
- applicants for the W2 position need a strong record within a second field of research which is to differ from their PhD subject and has to be substantiated by a Habilitation or an equivalent composed in the context of a assistant professorship (Juniorprofessur), lecture/fellowship (wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterstelle) or similar
- a concept for the development (Erschließung) and research agenda regarding the archival sources housed at the FSO in one of the latter’s geographical core areas
- a sufficient record of teaching and pedagogical-didactical commitment.
