Negotiating with terrorists? Investigating the “root causes” of terrorism? Peace-building after terrorism? Preventing youth radicalization? A two-day conference at the University of Kent (Canterbury, UK) will gather key international scholars and practitioners to investigate how new approaches to peace and conflict studies can help us engage with terrorism.
Experts from across the world will investigate cases from Pakistan to Mindanao, Kenya to the UK, the Basque country to Syria as well as theoretical frameworks to strengthen our understanding of terrorism. Some of the questions examined include: What are the effects of labelling groups as “terrorist” on the possibility of peace? What are the links between foreign policy and terrorism? How should we understand the post-bin Laden al Qaeda?
The conference will also examine the alleged new frontiers of terrorism, with presentations on “cyber-terrorism,” “eco-terrorism” and the links between organized crime and terrorism.
Participants include leading terrorism and peace and conflict scholars (Prof Paul Rogers of the University of Bradford, UK; Prof Richard Jackson of the University of Otago, New Zealand; Prof Feargal Cochrane of the University of Kent, UK), senior military officials (also from EUFOR), counterterrorism experts, and policy analysts with key conflict resolution NGOs.
In an era when policy, media and academic focus on terrorism is unabated, the conference will investigate key unexplored questions of whether and how well-established peace and conflict studies approaches to conflict may help us better understand and engage with terrorism.
The conference will also be host to the annual lecture of the Critical Studies on Terrorism journal and will result in a special issue of the journal.
