It may be deprecated (actually, deleted), but it should still work if the compiler you're using claims to support it. Can you show us a test case that demonstrates a problem and tell us which compiler (name and version) you are using?
That said, alternate return would be better handled by returning an error status, either as a function result or in a dummy argument, and letting the caller decide what to do about it.
