Globalization-Security Linkages
Date: 7 September 2012Time: 9:00 AM
Finishes: 8 September 2012Time: 4:00 PM
Venue: Russell Square: College Buildings Room: G3
The Centre of Taiwan Studies at SOAS is scheduled to hold an
international conference on ‘Cross-Strait Relations in the Age of
Globalization’ on 7-8 September 2012. The conference will use both
theoretical and empirical perspectives in order to explore the evolution
of relations between Taiwan and Mainland China since the late 1980s,
with a particular emphasis on important but hitherto under-researched
issues related to cross-Strait globalization-security linkages.
The conference plans to investigate four major areas:
theoretical approaches to the study of cross-Strait relations;
globalization forces underpinning bilateral ties;
security issues facing Taipei and Beijing;
the impact of globalization on security in the dyadic context.
Twelve papers will be presented at the conference. Motifs for discussion
will include, for instance: rationalist models of conflict and the
relationship across the Strait; cross-border mergers and acquisitions
between China and Taiwan; cyber warfare across the Strait and its
implications for the USA; transnational crimes in the Cross-Strait
context; and the impact of production globalization on defense and
technological security across the Strait, with special reference to the
strategically important semiconductor industry.
Dr Lai Shin-yuan, Minister of Mainland Affairs Council, Taiwan, is
scheduled to give a pre-luncheon talk on 7 September.
Paper presenters include:
Prof. Yu-shan Wu (Academia Sinica)
