in Ireland.

Fiona Murphy
PhD Studentship
Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship for a project funded by the
School of Nursing and Human Sciences, Faculty of Science and Health, Dublin
City University, entitled*: An investigation into spaces where play as a
form of physical activity in middle childhood and adolescence in Ireland
takes place*
Much of children and young peoples play and recreation involves physical
activity, such as chasing games (Barron 2011). Despite this knowledge,
physical activity play has to-date largely been ignored in relation to
studies of physical activity in children and adolescents in the prevention
and treatment of childhood overweight and obesity. This study aims to
identify specific forms of physical activity play that children and
adolescents aged 8 – 18 years engage in across differing spaces in urban
and rural settings. The methodology will be from the ethnographic tradition.
Specific Objectives for the research:
Ø To establish current forms of physical activity play that children
in middle childhood and adolescence like to engage in.
Ø To ascertain any differences in physical activity play behaviours
between gender and ages.
Ø To determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in this
population.
Ø To identify differences and similarities in play spaces between
schools and neighbourhoods in urban and rural settings, and forms of
physical activity play engaged in.
Ø To ascertain barriers and enablers, from the participants
perspective, to physical activity play in the school, local neighbourhoods
and the wider built environment.
Applicants must have a 2.1 (or higher) degree (or equivalent). Research
experience will be of benefit and a proven interest in children and
childhood. The successful applicants will register for their PhD and be
based in the School of Nursing and Human Sciences, Dublin City University
from 1 October 2012 under the supervision of Dr. Carol Barron and Dr Fiona
Murphy.
This position is for a three-year period from 1 October, 2012. The value of
the studentship is €16,000 per annum (tax free), and payment of research
fees for three years. Please submit a full CV (including the names of two
academic referees) and a personal letter of interest by e-mail to Dr. Carol
Barron, Lecturer, School of Nursing and Human Sciences, Faculty of Science
and Health , Dublin City University, Dublin 9 (E-mail: [log in to unmask])
by *5pm, 14th September 2012*.
