Dear allstaters
I am looking for references about statistical treatments of the problem of generalizability (aka external validity) of randomised trials. What I mean is the fact that the results of randomised trials (experiments etc) are based on individuals (or clusters etc) which are not representative from a specified target population (e.g. not simple random samples + did not give consent etc...) so generalisation is defined generally as the extent to which such results are valid in the target population and in some other cases in other populations (for example results in rural setting to what extent are valid on an urban setting?).
There is a bunch of stuff written about this but there is little on the quantitative side of things which is what I am after! I am aware of some of the literature but I want to make sure I do not miss something important!
References on equivalent problems in other areas are also very much appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your help
Karim
