The Joint Archives Service for Dorset, Poole and Bournemouth (JAS) is seeking a new recruit to take on and develop the service's approach to digital preservation - that is, ensuring the long term authenticity and integrity of digital materials of all types in all file formats. The JAS has identified digital preservation as an area of work that requires specific resourcing to support it and this role will take on that task.
You will take a lead role in embedding ShARE EDRM technology within the JAS and work to establish how this
software might contribute to the development of a digital preservation solution. Work on how the service might integrate digital preservation with ADLIB archive management software will also be undertaken.
You will work closely with JAS colleagues on digital preservation and suggest the most efficient and appropriate means for the service to develop a sustainable approach to this area of its remit.
Whilst the majority of your time will be spent engaged with digital preservation, you will also be required at times to assist with other aspects of the service’s work including working in the public search room, delivering talks and a range of other duties including Saturday work as required.
You will be required to research and guide the incremental development and implementation of a digital preservation solution for the JAS and to determine the required processes, workflows and associated functionality for the curation of digital archives based on existing principles, standards and methodologies.
You will be responsible for a significant amount of self-directed learning and development associated with digital preservation; accessioning and cataloguing of digital archives and preparing and delivering lectures and/or talks on the aims and purposes of digital preservation and also on the work of the Dorset History Centre. You will manage film and sound archive collections as relates to their digital potential.
You will work collaboratively with colleagues from other archive services including The National Archives to further the understanding and application of digital preservation practice and liaise with the creators and depositors/donors of digital content to ensure wherever possible the preparedness of material for ingest and with colleagues from Records Management and IT within the three funding councils in order to further the establishment of a digital preservation solution for the JAS.
