Research Associate (Post-doctoral) - Experimental Software Systems Group

Fixed Term appointment for 1 year with possible extension

Preferred starting date is 1st October 2012

Salary in the range: £31,300 - £39,920 per annum

The Department of Computing is a leading department of Computer Science among UK Universities. It has consistently been awarded the highest research rating (5*) in Research Assessment Exercises (RAE), coming 2nd in the 2008 RAE, and was rated as "Excellent" in the previous national assessment of teaching quality.

We are seeking to recruit a Research Associate (post-doctoral) for the EC FP7 Grant funded project HARNESS: Hardware- and Network-Enhanced Software Systems for Cloud Computing. Imperial College London is the coordinating partner, with participation from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (CH), Université de Rennes I (FR), Zuse Institute Berlin (DE), Maxeler Technologies (UK), and SAP AG (DE). The project will begin on 1 October 2012 for a duration of 3 years.

The goal of the HARNESS project is to integrate heterogeneous hardware and network technologies into data centre plaforms, vastly increasing performance, reducing energy consumption, and lowering cost profiles for important and high-value cloud applications such as real-time business analytics and the geosciences. In particular, we investigate how next-generation computational (e.g., FPGAs and GPGPUs), communication (e.g., software network routers and in-path elements), and storage (e.g., solid-state disk drives) technologies can be seamlessly integrated into Platform-as-a-Service frameworks for improving the utility of cloud data centres. The challenges in the project span from capturing new kinds of heterogeneous resources to designing flexible application architectures.

Applicants with a strong background in Computing as evidenced by a PhD degree (or equivalent) and a proven research track record in one or more of the following areas will be preferred:

FPGA design and acceleration technology
Software systems
Networking and/or storage technologies
You will work with the HARNESS partners to produce independent and original research related to the project, to produce research publications, to design, build, deploy, and experiment with software prototypes, and to assist in the financial and technical management of the project. Preference will be given to applicants with a proven research record and publication s in the relevant areas. You must be fluent in English.

You will be jointly part of the Experimental Software Systems Research Group (http://ess.doc.ic.ac.uk/) and the Custom Computing Research Group (http://cc.doc.ic.ac.uk/) based at the South Kensington campus.

How to apply:

Our preferred method of application is online via our website at: http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/employment (please select "job search" then enter the job title or vacancy reference number EN20120211TT into "keywords"). Please complete and upload an application form as directed.

Applications must include:

A college application form
Please quote job reference number HARNESS 2 AW0712 on the application form
A full CV
A 2 page research statement indicating what you see are interesting research issues relating to the above post and why your expertise is relevant.
Should you have any queries regarding the application process please contact Joanne Day by email to: [log in to unmask]

Closing Date: 15th August 2012
