In advanced economies the housing sector contributes approximately one quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing domestic CO2 consumption will be central to any wider strategy for emissions reduction. Many countries have introduced higher environmental standards for new homes but progress in the domestic sector has been highly uneven. While there are examples of innovation and good practice in many countries this has often been slow to influence mainstream development practices. This session aims to bring together researchers from a wide variety of backgrounds working on new housing and sustainability. Some topics papers may address include but are not limited to:
• The impact of green labelling schemes such as LEED and the Code for Sustainable Homes, and the potential of recent community-level schemes such as Green Star – Communities.
• The role of regional and city governments, and arms-length development bodies, in promoting more sustainable new residential developments
• Innovation (and lack of innovation) in the housebuilding industry
• The role of supply chains in sustainable residential development
• The impact of lobby groups from business and the environmental sector on sustainable housing
• Contrasting approaches to more sustainable developments with some advocating high-tech products while others promote vernacular techniques
• The wider application of techniques developed on green demonstration projects
• The effectiveness of national legislation in driving higher standards for green housing
• The (im)balance between the prioritisation of carbon and other important environmental considerations such as water consumption, sustainably sourced timber and eco-toxicity in building products
