We follow DoH retention schedules, which are 8 years after death or last contact with our Hospitals. However, particular records (e.g. cancer) are tagged, and kept for 30 years. There are some other records, such as hip replacement, which we tag and keep longer as well.
So, 8 years is minimum, but with exceptions for particular types of health problems. I would imaging GP records will be handled in a similar fashion.

Subject: Retention schedules for medical records
Hello all,
I am looking for some advice in regards to retention schedules for medical records, in particular GP records.
There seems to be conflicting guidance:
DH states GP records should be kept until 10 years after the patient's death or after the patient has permanently left the country, unless they remain in the European Union.
Within the NHS RM Code of Practice Creutzfeldt-Kakob Disease (CJD) hospital and GP records should be kept for 30 years from date of diagnosis, including deceased patients. This is derived from the CJD incidents panel.
Can anyone in a medical setting advise what they usually do in regards to death records?
Thanks
Jess
