Overview of the two-day Introduction to NVivo 9.2 and 10 Training
Target Audience
All researchers, academics, service staff, and students who are collecting qualitative data involving: documents, photos, audio, video, spreadsheets, databases, literature reviews, bibliographic references, social media content (twitter, linnkedIn, facebook), and Evernode files, and are aiming to qualitatively analyse the data using any methodology; including mixing qualitative and quantitative data.
This course is designed for the complete beginner as well as those who have used previous versions of the software e.g. : NVivo9, NVivo 8, NVivo 7, N6, and NVivo 2.
Pre-requisites
No previous knowledge is required and you are encouraged to bring your own data, if you have any, at least a transcript of one interview in Word format or a pdf of a literature search. You will be provided with data if you have no data. Laptops are provided for all participants, however if you prefer to work from your own laptop, then you are welcome to bring it but please make sure that NVivo is installed on the laptop before bringing it to the course. If you have not yet acquired your own NVivo 10 licence, you can download a FREE 30day trial copy from the QSR website.
Aim of Course
This two-day workshop will provide you with a thorough introduction of the main features of NVivo 10, using a sample data. You will learn how to efficiently and effectively manage, code and analyse: structured, semi-structured and unstructured interview data. This includes multimedia data sources, social media contents, Evernote files, Excel spreadsheets, Access databases, and bibliographic references. You will also be shown how to use framework matrices.
Course Outline
Explore NVivo 10 software using a sample project.
Set up a New Project
•Create a folder structure to store your documents – internal, external, and memos.
•Create your thematic coding framework(s) nodes, case nodes, and auto-coding nodes.
•Format your documents using heading styles to take advantage of auto-coding where appropriate, particularly focus group transcripts.
•Import your project sources - documents, transcripts, videos, audio files, photos, twitter, web pages, evernotes, pdfs, databases, spreadsheets and bibliographic data if working with publication sources.
•Explore how to transcribe audio and video files in NVivo.
•Use auto-code facility to quickly and conveniently split participants of focus group transcripts and make nodes of their transcripts as well as classify the nodes. You could also use auto-code to extract interview responses organised by topics.
•Classify your sources and nodes.
Code Sources into Thematic Coding structure and Temporary themes
•Store your reflections, ideas and field notes as annotations and memos.
•Link thoughts, anchor key phrases and words within transcripts to internal and external sources (photos, sounds, videos, URL, documents) to build associations.
•Code references from sources into the thematic coding framework nodes and or free (emergent) nodes for later re-housing into the thematic framework nodes.
•Code the extracts and notes of external data sources, such as literature reviews, government documents, policy documents and books.
•Explore how to code video and audio media directly in NVivo without use of full transcript.
•Examine and ‘weed out’ the collection of references gathered into thematic nodes.
•Sort, merge, relocate, organise and restructure your thematic nodes.
•Code-on further from your existing nodes (themes), for in-depth references gathering.
Use Queries and Models to explore patterns and analyse themes
•Create queries to excavate in-depth meaning; explore patterns and relationships in the data.
•Create models to display patterns and relationships; and to summarise your current understanding of the project.
•Export your models to PowerPoint to present your findings.
•Visualise your project in charts, tree maps and cluster analysis diagrams.
Explore Framework Matrices
•Create framework matrices to summarise your data.
•Surmmarise your coding references automatically into framework matrices.
Reporting and Administration
•Produce various administrative reports of your project items.
•Learn how to setup a project involving a number of researchers or coders from different geographical locations, working on the same project.
Learning Support on the Course
Your tutor will require you to set-up your own project. You will be given time to receive feedback on your node structure, coding, classifications, models, graphs and queries. Your node system will be thoroughly examined for efficiency, to ensure that the structure will support in-depth data analyses.
Teaching Methods
The teaching method is mainly hands-on, its supported by presentation, demonstration, reflection, insightful exercises, discussions, questions and answers, opportunity for participants to share tips and insights, and clinic sessions for advice on your own data.
Cost
The two days course cost for academic delegate is £323.26+VAT and £371.75+VAT for commercial delegate. Participants receive a comprehensive training workbook, after training support, lunches and refreshments for the duration of the 2 days.
