Coming from the viewpoint of an artist, and teaching Fine Art at
undergraduate and graduate levels, I use all kinds of tools, and see
students and all the artists around me using a whole range of tools.
Sometimes these are printing presses, sometimes websites, sometimes
electronics, sometimes cutting edge science, sometimes obsolete
technologies. We embrace the whole range of tools humankind has
invented, or mash together new tools. What these tools have in common
is relevance to the idea. We use tools to express an idea in the most
elegant way.
I see art made with tools which the old guard term "new media" all
around: in public galleries, commercial galleries and art fairs,
institutions, art schools, private collections, public collections and
artists using such tools teach in art schools, and have high profile
residencies and public commissions. It may not always be the artworks
I consider the best or most relevant. But it is there. In plain and
visible sight.
