PhD Studentship Available
University of Liverpool
Reducing the burden of overprescribing – developing personalised medicine
£13,590 pa stipend
We are looking for a critical creative thinker to join our team in investigating solutions to a problem we have recently described - that of overprescribing in primary care.
The University of Liverpool, with support from the National Institute for Health Research, is funding a three year PhD studentship within the Department of Health Services Research. The burden of polypharmacy is largely an iatrogenic phenomenon; created by the systems, processes and practices we have for making decisions about care, along with wider social and cultural expectations of a ‘technical fix’ for health problems and a deep faith in medical technology. The PhD will take a whole systems approach to understanding why we overprescribe and what can be done about it. Candidates will work with the supervisors to develop a research question which reflects their previous areas of interest and experience. Some experience of primary care, social and cultural influences on health and health care, or prescribing would be an advantage. Candidates should havea minimum of a first class or upper second honours degree in a suitable discipline.
CVs and letters of interest should be emailed to Dr Joanne Reeve ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) by August 7th . Following an initial review, selected applicants will be notified of their invitation to make a full application. At this point they will be required to contact Lindsay Edmonds by email ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) for an application form. A brief written piece based on the subject area may be requested before interview.
