that particular zoo was almost empty back in those daze, compared to what it
looks like now.
the Ste Chapelle is also a relatively peaceful nearby alternative.

that side aisle at St. Julien, is no more than 3 meters wide, i should think,
and an easy span to cover over --it seems like there is almost as much ribbing
as webbing, in that small vault.
the ambulatory at St. D. is considerably wider

but has quadrapartite vaults, which lend a certain sense of "lightness" to the
whole.
the "ideology" vs "structure" argument is, i think, best illustrated at the
modest convent of Morienval (north east of Senlis, 1120s), where the
"ambulatory" is scarcely more than 4 feet wide (column to column --two people
cannot pass through it abreast)

and yet, it is covered with a rib vault

here (or there) it is clear that it is the "meaning" of the rib vault which is
important, not at all its structural function.
at St. Julien the 6-part vault is also necessitated by the "logic" (as in
Panofsky's _Gothic Architecture and Scholasticism_) of the alternating --weak
pier, strong pier-- elevation in the last straight bay of the choir
http://mappinggothic.org/archmap/media/buildings/001000/1371/images/1300/1371_00014_w.jpg
which ("logically) "demands" a 6-part vault over the side aisle.
funny thing, "logic."
*much* funnier than mere "structure."
