Thanks for mentioning my research Gary. I am pleased to see that others have raised the fact that our rubbish is not necessarily another persons treasure. I am frequently banging my head on my desk over this issue.
In the library where I was doing my research in Malawi, I found a "cooking with food processors" cookbook, which had been sent to them at great expense by the charity involved in setting up the school library. The village had no electricity but even if they had no one could afford a food processor. Most of the local people could only afford to eat Nsima, a ground white maize flour. If they could stretch to more there were little other foods available. For many of the children at the school the daily breakfast provided by the World Food Programme was the only meal they had all day. Still, at least they could gaze at the food we are fortunate to be able eat and wonder what at what food processor is. This was just one of many of the surprisingly inappropriate books I discovered in the library that would have been more use pulped.
