Overview:
We are coming to the end of our 2010-2012 programme framework for NetIKX and have been preparing our framework for 2013-2015.
One of our five key themes in our previous framework was that of ensuring business value and cost effectiveness in everything that we do. In fact it is such an important theme, that our new framework will be highlighting it as a key perspective to underline all our seminars.
We thought it appropriate therefore, to make this a feature of our AGM seminar this year, which also marks an important anniversary, twenty years on from the founding of the IRM Network, which was eventually to become NetIKX.
Our two speakers for this seminar, although operating in two very different sectors and environments, both have a commitment to deliver value, and ensure cost effectiveness to both internal and external clients – so that we thought they would have some good perspectives on this important topic.
Learning objectives:
• To gain insights into how different businesses can deliver business value to their clients (both internal and external)
• To consider different ways of ensuring cost effectiveness in how we work
• To consider the implications of cost constraints in how we deliver value, and how value is perceived by our clients
Speakers and topics:
Roger Farbey – BDA
How to justify the implementation and continuation of a new KM service
• How can a small to medium sized company justify the expenditure of both adopting a KM strategy and appointing a new full-time post of Knowledge Manager?
• How can a Knowledge Manager convince the Directors and staff of the company to “buy into” KM? What hurdles do they need to overcome?
• What are the strategies and practical actions that they must adopt in order to achieve their goals?
• In short, does KM ensure business value and cost effectiveness?
• Conversely, does it make business sense to do without KM?
• Finally, if resistance to KM becomes intractable is there a remedy for reversing this resistance?
This talk focuses on the case study of how the BDA introduced KM and how it aims to keep it going.
Megan Roberts – Oxford Innovation
Cost effectiveness: providing a service and proving value without a budget
Megan has been working at Oxford Innovation, a small business support company, since 2008. She is currently providing a one-woman information service whilst juggling the vagaries of small company budgeting, allocating costs to specific projects rather than having a central budget. As an information professional, how can you reinforce the importance of information and knowledge management, of the expertise of a professional in research or the knowledge of legislation that can help discourage illegal practices?
Megan will outline how she works at Oxford Innovation and the lessons others can learn from her experience.
