I'm a list owner and a long (not of lis-link I hasten to add) time ago the matter of attachments was raised, long before Facebook or any of those things and the answer was flat email messages. I saw recently that the "ownership" of jiscmail had moved elsewhere but wasn't paying a lot of attention.

There is a lot to be said for lite messaging without noise, but now that we have the whole social networking apparatus it is far from clear what value jiscmail adds at all?

Given lis-linkers are concerned with this sort of thing at the policy level, and we all have links with policy originating organisations, debating those sorts of issues should be our bread and butter?

I still don't think search works particularly effectively on jiscmail and would rather see resources put into re:search if resources were going to go into anything. Being able to visualise the semantics of the themes of messages and perhaps improve the threading and re:levance, for re:ference (oh, dear so many and it is only Monday morning)... plus bibli0graphy for the production of learning.

Hi - can anyone tell me who the list owner is for lis-link and/or whether there would be any problem sending an attachment on an email to lis-link and whether logos can be embedded in the email? I've looked on the Jiscmail website but can't find the info.

Thanks, Liz

I think [log in to unmask] should reach the owner.

Sending attachments to mailing lists is a bad idea because as soon as
you attach a binary file to an email, it expands by about 30% (because
of base64 encoding), making it even larger. It is better to include a
URL where the file can be downloaded. If you don't have an upload
space, try Open Directory - Web Applications: Storage: Free.

So I'd not send attachments to mailing lists unless it's usual practice
(like sending a patch to a software development list) or you really
have no alternative. You will be taking up a lot of space, roughly the
size of the attachment multiplied by the number of people on the
list. One 3Mb waste is bad. 300 times 3Mb gets painful if common.

Also, some of those people may be reading over expensive/slow mobile
links (like I currently am - grrr, thanks o2fail!) and if your email
gets too big, they'll delete the email unread. Small text emails are
best.

Sometimes there's no alternative, though.

Hope that informs,

Did anyone record Macbeth (with Patrick Stewart) broadcast on BBC4, 26th June 2012? If so, please would they be kind enough to send me a copy in return for a blank DVD-R. We are ERA compliant. Thanks.

Subject: Free reading list workshop at Loughborough

Meeting the reading list challenge 2012: A workshop
Keith Green Building, Loughborough University
Thursday 16th August 2012, 10:00am – 3:30pm

How do you get stakeholders interested in online reading lists? And how does
a reading list management system relate to other systems?

These issues, and many others, will be discussed at this forthcoming workshop.

The morning session will explore academic engagement with reading lists whilst
the afternoon will focus on how a reading lists management system (RLMS) could
interact with other systems. Both sessions will include presentations and group
discussions.

There will be a buffet lunch provided during which there will be a poster session.
All attendees are encouraged to submit a poster highlighting what they expect
from a RLMS, what their experiences of a RLMS are, or what interesting things
they've done with an RLMS?

This is a free event. If you would like to attend please email Gary Brewerton
([log in to unmask]) to reserve a place stating your name, institution
and any specific dietary requirements.

Subject: Library Assistant survey

Hello,

I am currently writing my LIS MA dissertation about library assistants:
trying to build a picture about what sort of work they do, how their
jobs are affected by budget cuts and technological advances, and what
career development opportunities are available.
I would be very grateful if any library assistants, or those working in
a job that doesn't require a library qualification, would fill out a
short survey in an attempt to find answers to some of these questions.

The survey can be found here http://tinyurl.com/6q5gjyo and should take
10-15 minutes to complete.

All responses will be treated anonymously and no individuals or places
of work will be named in my dissertation or survey analysis.

Many thanks
Lindsay Tudor

Be part of the vision; be part of the RIBA.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) champions better
buildings, communities and the environment through architecture and its
members. With a passion to promote a wider public appetite and interest
in architecture through its website, exhibitions, talks and four
million-strong collections, the RIBA has led the profession since its
foundation in 1834, and continues to lead as architects face the
challenges of the 21st century.

Established in 1834, the British Architectural Library (BAL) is one of
the world's preeminent collections for research and information on all
aspects of architecture and the largest of its kind in Europe. Around
3.2 million items dating from 1478, including photographs, drawings,
archives, books and manuscripts, are available to the public through our
study rooms at 66 Portland Place and at the V&A in South Kensington,
home of the V&A+RIBA Partnership.

The BAL is embarking upon an exciting and transformative review of its
services and is seeking to recruit to this newly-created role, a
talented individual with the vision and commitment to lead the
development and delivery of the Library's 2012-2016 digital strategy.

You will have a proven record of staff and service management ideally
with some experience of income-generation, along with a demonstrated
ability to innovate and to inspire colleagues, users and other key
stakeholders. You should also have experience of managing a broad range
of collection types and of using ICT to manage and provide access to
these. This senior post will take responsibility for three core areas of
BAL activity:

* Development, management and provision of relevant, up-to-date and
user-friendly, digital services, both on-site and via the RIBA website,
www.architecture.com <http://www.architecture.com/> ;

* Overseeing the management, development and delivery of on-site and
remote information services at Portland Place, and

* Overseeing the management and development of technical services,
including library systems, book and serials cataloguing, and our
indexing service, Architectural Periodicals Index.

If you would like to apply for this position, please complete and send a
CV, covering letter, Applicants Statement and Equal Opportunities
Monitoring Form for the attention of Wendy Fish by email:
