DEADLINE EXTENSION: CALL FOR PAPERS: *How to Design Touch Interfaces for
and with Older Adults: Identification of Challenges and Opportunities*
in conjunction with NordiCHI2012
October 14th, 2012
Copenhagen, Denmark
http://workshops.icts.sbg.ac.at/NordiCHI2012
------------------------------------------------------------------------
TOPIC:
Older adults are a challenging user group, as they might not be familiar
with new interfaces such as touch interfaces, or have physical or
cognitive limitations in using them. Industry and research are
recognizing older adults as a target group; however, there is no
profound knowledge about how to design for and with this special user
group (e.g., in terms of user-centered design and participatory design),
and which particular role affordances might play. The aim of this
workshop is to catch up and systematically generate knowledge about how
to design with and for older adults. Therefore, this workshop aims at
providing a platform for researchers and practitioners to discuss the
design of touch interfaces for and with older adults, to closely look at
the role of affordances, challenges and opportunities.
PARTICIPATION:
Exchange and interaction among participants from different communities
and with various backgrounds is strongly encouraged. Additionally, a
mixture of academic and industrial participants is anticipated. The
workshop encourages interdisciplinary discussions and aims at including
researchers and practitioners in the fields of interaction design,
interface design, psychology, cognitive science, sociology, interaction
design, etc.
Position papers are invited, but are not limited, on the following topics:
* How are touch interfaces currently designed (e.g., which guidelines
are used, if any)?
* Which role do affordances play in touch interfaces for older adults?
* Which challenges and opportunities arise when designing touch
interfaces for and with older adults?
* How can the collective knowledge be used to derive design guidelines
for touch interfaces for older adults?
SUBMISSION:
Workshop candidates are requested to submit a position paper (must be
formatted according to ACM SIGCHI Publications Format and should not
exceed 4 pages) about research or work they have been involved with
(related to the topics described above) via email
[log in to unmask] Papers will be reviewed by an invited
program committee and selected according to their significance as well
as their potential to stimulate discussion. At least one author of
accepted papers needs to register for the workshop and for the
conference itself. All accepted papers will be made available on the
website.
IMPORTANT DATES: EXTENDED
August 13th, 2012 - Submission of Position Papers
August 27th, 2012 - Notification of Acceptance
September 15th, 2012 - Camera Ready Paper Version
October 14th, 2012 - One-Day Workshop at NordiCHI 2012
EXPECTED OUTCOME
The outcome of the workshop will be twofold: On the one hand, it will
help understanding the most important issues for design guidelines
regarding touch interfaces for older adults, and to prioritize them. On
the other hand, the workshop aims at providing the basis for a future
cooperative publication of the participants on adequate design
guidelines or a research agenda.
