As part of the Coalition government’s recentausterity measures state
subsidy for the arts has been slashed in the UK by 29%, with further
cuts being imposed on artsorganisations by local Councils. TheDCMS is
now in the process of implementing an American model of patronage. It
recentlyannounced a £55 million Endowment Fund and invited American
PhilanthropistMichael Kaiser to run master-classes for British Arts
organisations with theaim of creating ‘a ground shift in organisational
thinking.’ The intention isto ‘strengthen business models in the arts
and diversify their income streamsby encouraging private giving.’
Butwhilst the UK government has reacted to economic downturn
byintroducing swingeing cuts to the arts and a move towards a
philanthropic model,France’s response to the recession has been to
increasegovernment spending on the arts by 2%.
This conference will bring together leadingacademics, practitioners and
policy makers to discuss, debate and deliberatethe past, present and
future of theatre funding.
Does this move towards anAmerican model of patronage signal the end for
the guiding principles of statesubsidy for the Arts in the UK?
What is the future fortheatres and audiences in these uncertain times?
Join us to find out.
