Post-Doctoral Fellowship, Statistics
Clinical Statistics (CS) provides statistical expertise and input to the design, analysis and interpretation of clinical projects across all phases of development. In doing so, CS utilizes modelling and simulation tools to ensure efficient designs are deployed that will maximise the chance of effective decision-making.
As part of GSK’s commitment to “Re-engineer Phase”, we are funding a Postdoctoral Fellowship for a suitable individual, to develop optimal modelling approaches to help with the design and interpretation of dose-finding, or dose-response, studies. Such studies form a crucial pivot in drug development, moving a molecule from its earliest indications of potential value (“Proof of Concept”), to a medicine ready – in the sense that an appropriate dose, based on both efficacy and safety considerations, has been accurately identified – for its final, large clinical trials (“Phase 3”).
The appointed candidate will explore the range of historical and novel methodologies available the statistician tasked with designing and analysing such studies. He or she will perform a systematic review of the statistical/modelling strategies suitable for: the selection of the most appropriate model(s); methods of model-fitting; post-fit inference about optimal dose selection. Exploration and implementation of novel techniques (e.g. Bayesian model-averaging) will form part of the role, together with a sensitivity analysis/simulation exercise into the performance characteristics of the range of methods, using both simulated and real dose-ranging clinical trial data.
Once methodology has been developed, the appointed candidate will develop tools and provide training to embed methodology within GSK teams.
Key areas requiring elaboration include the use of non-linear biological models, comparisons with semi-parametric models (e.g Normal Dynamic Linear Model or Splines). The use of Bayesian (including Model Averaging) approaches for both model-fitting, and decision-making, and the formal incorporation of model uncertainty into inference about the dose-response curve or target dose will also be investigated to form part of the approaches considered together with other novel approaches.
Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position. The post is a two year fixed-term contract.
The position will be based in Europe, with requirements for the appointed candidate to attend regular meeting at UK site (Stockley Park or Stevenage).
