Hi Peadar,
Part of my FRCpath project was to setup and evaluate the modified bilirubin methods. I setup both the Jendrassik and Grof, and the vanadate oxidation bilirubin methods. Both methods worked really well (CV, linearity etc.), with very similar performance. The only drawback of both methods is the strong negative interference from haem (but not RBC). Any sample that is visibly haemolysed (even a minor pink tinge) would not be suitable for analysis.
Kind regards,
Raf.

Subject: automated bilirubin assay for CSF bilirubin
Dear colleagues,
In January, on this mailbase, Trevor Walmsley replied to a query concerning xanthochromia by referring interested parties to the modified automated bilirubin assay used in his laboratory, details of which were published previously in the Annals (Chao CY, Florkowski CM, Fink JN, Southby SJ, George PM. Ann Clin Biochem. 2007 Mar;44(Pt 2):140-4.
I would like to know if any readers of this email have used this method and what your experience has been.
Thanks in anticipation.
best wishes.
Peadar
