QUEENSLAND UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY: SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION

A PhD scholarship is available for Australian or New Zealand citizens, or Australian permanent residents, to support full-time research on optimal design for drill core sampling. International candidates are welcome to apply, but will be liable for tuition fees, unless a waiver can be obtained (on a competitive basis). This scholarship offers a major opportunity to engage directly with the mining industry and to contribute to a highly innovative program on mine project evaluation. The PhD research is funded by the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC-ORE) and is associated with a CRC-ORE funded project on integrated mining and project evaluation. BHP Billiton and the Quantitative Group are the project's industrial partners.

SUPERVISORY TEAM

The successful candidate will be principally supervised by Dr Helen Thompson, Professor Tony Pettitt, Professor Erhan Kozan, School of Mathematical Sciences, Queensland University of Technology, and Professor Rodney Wolff, WH Bryan Mining and Geology Research Centre, University of Queensland. Enrolment will be at the Gardens Point (city centre) campus of Queensland University of Technology, in the School of Mathematical Sciences, one of the leading mathematics research groups in Australia.

AVAILABILITY

The scholarship is available immediately. It is expected that the successful candidate will commence by 1 July 2012, and remain enrolled on a full-time basis throughout the candidature.

PAYMENT INFORMATION

The value of this scholarship is at the usual Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) rate (AUD23728 per annum in 2012) tax-free, and with the usual increments. This award is to be used for living expenses. This scholarship is paid fortnightly for the period of 3 years. Additional casual tutoring of undergraduate subjects and casual research assistance may also be available to suitably qualified candidates. Tuition fees for this position may be waived for high quality international students who are so liable. Generally, Australian citizens and permanent residents, and New Zealand citizens, are eligible for a HECS waiver, and effectively do not pay tuition fees.

ELIGIBILITY

This scholarship is for study in Australia for those who hold a first-class (or equivalent) degree, or a strong masters degree, in statistics, mathematics, mining engineering, computer science, or other relevant or related field with a heavy quantitative element. Candidates with an upper second-class honours degree, or equivalent, in statistics or mathematics with appropriate postgraduate research experience and/or good knowledge required to undertake the project may also apply.

APPLICATION DETAILS

Applications for the scholarship should comprise a curriculum vitae, transcript of academic results, and a statement of interest in the proposed research and capabilities to carry out the study. Candidates will need to satisfy standard entry requirements for the PhD program at QUT prior to any firm offer of a scholarship. Applicants will need to apply using normal QUT procedures. It is recommended that the application for admission be made after the application for a scholarship, upon receipt of a conditional funding offer. See http://www.studyfinder.qut.edu.au/ for information about the PhD course at QUT (search under course code "IF49"). QUT reserves the right to select a candidate outside this process, or not to make any appointment.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

The deadline for applications is Sunday, 17 June 2012, at 5pm AEST. Applications by email are preferred. Applications may be sent to, and enquiries addressed to
