Hi All,
Sophie & committee - like it! A good idea - and also loving the
comments/suggestions form Sara, Chris, Caleb etc. re
contributions/participation too.
Kelvin and I have a bit of a hankering to have a 'public conversation'
on 'Fuller Geographies' ... a progression from a conversation I had in
press with Duncan Fuller, a key person in starting up PyGy working group
- many of you may not have come across this, in case you're interested
the ref is Fuller, D. & Askins, K. (2007) 'The discomforting rise of
"public geographies": a "public" conversation', Antipode, 39(4):
579-601.
The idea would be to have a follow up conversation, in which we chat
about keeping participatory and collaborative spaces open - making space
for them - through for example sessions such as the' Fuller
Geographies' at IBG annual conferences, and academic seminar blockades
(Copenhagen, Faslane) and so on ... linking progress in participatory
research, theory and teaching to debates around the 'public' university,
democracy, knowledge productions, resisting neoliberalism and creating
the kind of academia we hope for ...
Of course, such a conversation could be as collaboratively written as
you - literally you - want it to be!
To keep the process manageable, though, Kelvin and I suggest we draft a
conversation which invites contributions and critiques, and ensures that
there will be space/s for those responses. We feel this response space
is essential to the spirit of the project, and in line with the central
topic of making space for Fuller Geographies - physically and also in
our writing, eh?
We'll perhaps know better how to manage a broader
participation/collaboration once Sophie et al., have clearer details as
to which journal, timelines etc etc?? Of course, advice on process is
welcome!
In solidarity
Kye and Kelvin
