Socio-Economic Planning Sciences will publish a special issue on green transportation and logistics. The goal of this special issue is to compile state-of-the art research, spanning modeling, theory, empirical studies, application and case studies in this emerging and rich research area. We seek operations research oriented contributions that are rigorously executed, clearly and succinctly written, and innovative relative to what is currently known. In light of the scope of SEPS, all papers must clearly demonstrate the relevance of their contributions with respect to the public sector.
There has been a growing concern in recent years about the environmental footprint of transportation and logistics, mainly –but not limited to– CO2 emissions. Operations research methodologies can help design more fuel-efficient transportation systems such as car and bicycle sharing arrangements, city logistics, intermodality and reverse logistics. Recent studies have shown that energy savings and emission reductions can be achieved through the use of more efficient vehicles, speed optimization and better routing and scheduling, sometimes without significantly increasing operating costs. The scope of the special issue covers all modes of transportation, as well as relevant network design and operational decisions. To qualify for the special issue, submissions must truly address environmental concerns (beyond merely minimizing travel distance) and they must be presented within an operations research perspective (which excludes pure engineering contributions, for example).
All manuscripts should be submitted electronically via the Elsevier Editorial System (EES) http://ees.elsevier.com/seps. You must select Green Transportation and Logistics as the Article Type to make sure that your paper will be considered for the special issue. The submission deadline is November 1, 2012. The plan is to publish the special issue in early 2014. Researchers from all relevant disciplines are invited to consider this special issue as an outlet to publish their quality work on this topic of increasing significance.
