The Role
We are looking for a highly motivated, suitably experienced information professional to contribute to the Library’s support for learning and research within the Colleges and School of Advanced Studies of the University of London, and externally.
With a number of changes taking place within the organisation, this interim 6 months post, is intended to provide cover while a review takes place of the previous post which was shared with the Institute of Historic Research.
The Senate House Library and Institute of Historical Research collections in history are the largest combined holdings of any UK university. The Senate House Library collection is a comprehensive research-level collection, covering all periods of history, with strengths in British and European history and close links with material in the Institute of Historic Research Library, and in the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, United States and Latin American and Caribbean collections. The collection is supplemented by the Libraries holdings of rare and historic collections.
Requirements
This is a key role, working with one of our major subject collections, you will need professional experience both of the subject area and of the demands of working in an academic library, or similar environment, with a variety of stakeholders.
You will be required to provide training and advice in information literacy, particularly at research level, in one to one and group sessions. Experience of using of social media for the promotion of collections and services would be an advantage.
Essential qualities for this role include good interpersonal skills, as demonstrated by the ability to build appropriate relationships and partnerships with a wide range of users.
About The Department
Senate House Libraries, University of London constitute one of the world's most significant collections in the arts, humanities and social sciences. The eight collaborating libraries, at Senate House and for the Institutes of the School of Advanced Study together provide services to over 100,000 registered readers every year, from Colleges of the University and from the UK and international research base.
The combined holdings of the libraries amount to almost 4 million volumes, including many thousands of journals, and numerous deep and rich collections of research materials in subjects across the humanities and social sciences. The special collections embrace spectacular treasures like Shakespeare’s First Folio or the Coverdale Bible; renowned collections like the Goldsmiths’ Library of Economic Literature; and unusual and unique resources like the Harry Price Magic collection, the political pamphlets of the Institutes of Commonwealth and Latin American Studies, or the 300,000 photographs in the Warburg Institute.
