Hi,
Here at Canterbury Christ Church University we are looking to implement
a roving/roaming system.
Our library is spread out over 4 floors; we currently have an enquiry
desk on the ground floor but we would like our staff to become more
visible on the other 3 floors.
I wonder if any libraries especially academic libraries have carried
implemented roving/roaming and would be willing to exchange experiences.
In particular I am interested in the following aspects:
Roving when used as an addition to a pod/ additional enquiry desk- or is
it preferred instead of a fixed desk?
What services are carried out when roving/roaming? Is IT support
included? Did staff have to undertake training to provide this service?
The process of roving- when is roving carried out and for how long? How
is it decided which members of staff will be roving? How is roving
organised as per the size of building?
What did you want to achieve by implementing roving?
How are staff identified- Do they wear a uniform or carry identifiable
objects?
Do staff have the use of technological support when roving? - The use of
mobile devices such as Ipads/ smartphones? What is this support used
for, e.g. accessing user's library.
How do staff contact other staff when out roving- the use of phones or
headsets?
What was successful/ unsuccessful about roving?
How is quality measured/ stats collected?
How is roving/roaming advertised or promoted within the library?
If you can reply any information to me direct that would be much
appreciated.
Thanks,
Kind regards,
Kelly Goddard,
Senior Library Assistant
