The English Prize: the Capture of the ‘Westmorland’, an Episode of the Grand Tour
Ashmolean Museum 17 May – 27 August
A loan exhibition featuring the contents of a merchant ship captured on 7 January 1779 en route from Livorno to London, laden with the possessions of British travellers in Italy
As part of our programme of events during this special exhibition we have a special lecture on 4th July:
‘Magick Land’: British Landscape Painters in Italy in the 1770s
With Dr Scott Wilcox, Chief Curator of Art Collections and Senior Curator of Prints and Drawings, Yale Center for British Art
Headley Lecture Theatre Wednesday 4th July, 2.00-3.00
Oil paintings and watercolors on the Westmorland by John Robert Cozens, Jacob More, and Solomon Delane point to a community of British landscape painters active in Italy. This lecture examines that community and the impact of Italy, particularly the Roman Campagna, on the development of British landscape art.
Free, no booking required, spaces limited
