A big question, for me, Drawing has become my main focus as outcome in itself.
My ideas are based in an area of interest, or practise. In my case I work some ideas seem to come spontaneously come but mostly these ideas are in response to previous works and source material.
This source material comes from research and obsessions, pictures, artists, books, articles etc... I usually make notes on the idea or make a very quick sketch of the visual idea before I lose it.
From there I research my idea experimenting with various images and compositions, sometimes I do preliminary drawings. I then usually then start on the main piece, my choice of materials, chalk and charcoal, allows me to push and pull at the compositional make up and "feel" of the work, this goes on until the work is has reach final stages.
At this point if I am happy I will finish the work, addressing any minor issues, however if I am not completely happy I will rest the work and come back to it until I can resolve any lingering issues.

Subject: Idea to finished artwork
Hello researchers,
I am giving a lecture on Tuesday at Beijing Normal University on how an artist goes from an idea to a finished artwork.
What are your thoughts about this? What is your process, from your mind to finished artwork? What part does drawing play, not so much theoretically, but the steps that you take to initiate the drawings, how are the drawings actually used to process information or respond to it?
Thank you!!
Patty
