Digital learning placement at the British Museum
Are you interested in technology for education in museums? The British Museum is looking for a student to assist with on-site digital programmes for young people in the Samsung Digital Discovery Centre (www.britishmuseum.org/samsungcentre). The Centre offers a wide variety of educational workshops for schools, families and teens. You will be working mainly with primary school children (ages 7-11) and teachers, helping them to create artwork, videos, animated films, podcasts and other media inspired by the museum’s collection.
Your main responsibilities will include: 1) Preparation of equipment and materials for digital workshops; 2) Helping children during the workshops; 3) Post-processing of artwork and media that children create. Preparation involves set up and breakdown of computer equipment and furniture, tasks which require light lifting. Post-processing includes resizing images in Photoshop, editing video and audio files, and posting finished work to Flickr, Vimeo and other websites. In addition, you may also support the diverse education work of the busy Schools & Young Audiences team.
Ideally you will have previous experience working with children and be highly competent using technology such as Windows computers, digital cameras, MP3 players and mobile phones. You should be familiar with Adobe products such as Photoshop and Premiere. As you will interact directly with members of the public, you must be fluent in English and enjoy dealing with people.
Although this placement is focused on delivery of digital learning sessions for schools, there are opportunities to be involved in project work and to conduct research related to your area of interest. Two exciting projects for 2012 include a video conferencing programme about archaeology and a mobile trail for teenagers in the Islamic World gallery. This is an unpaid voluntary placement and students must cover their own expenses. It requires a commitment of 3-5 days per week for at least three months. You must be available to start between 10-17 September 2012.
