We are pleased to advertise an AHRC funded Collaborative Doctoral Award based at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, School of Advanced Studies, University of London, in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat. The project is entitled ‘Placing knowledge in a decolonizing world: The Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation and the histories of expertise for development’.
The PhD will focus on the histories and geographies of the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation (CFTC), in order to examine questions of the development of knowledge, expertise and cooperation in the context of a decolonizing and post-colonial world. The CFTC provides advice, expertise and training for development, through the provision of international experts in fields including agriculture, engineering, education, public service training and mineral extraction negotiations. The history of the CFTC charts an important transition in the post-colonial relations of the Commonwealth and in the development of notions of South-South cooperation. The fund piloted the use and sharing of expertise from developing countries rather than those from the North.
The student will be co-supervised by Professor Philip Murphy (Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London), Dr Ruth Craggs, Research Associate, Institute of Commonwealth Studies; Lecturer in Cultural and Historical Geography, University of Hull) and Miss Hilary McEwan (Archivist, Commonwealth Secretariat, London).
Applicants should provide a CV and a letter of application describing why they are suitably qualified to undertake the research project. Applications should be sent electronically to [log in to unmask] by the deadline of 5.00pm on Wednesday 4 July. Applicants should also arrange for two academic references to be sent to this address by the deadline.
