Please feel free to forward this to anyone who may be interested. Apologies if
you receive multiple copies.

The University of Portsmouth is offering a studentship to undertake research
leading to a PhD degree in Computing. The University has an international
reputation for much of its research work in computer science and informatics,
having participated in a number of collaborative projects with the NHS, industry
and academics elsewhere. You will join a growing team of inter-disciplinary
researchers spanning the School of Computing and other parts of the University.

The studentship will be awarded in one of the following areas:

- Modelling healthcare processes by rule-based networks
- Developing enhanced patient early-warning score models for hospital use
- Computational models for fast whole heart simulation
- Use of intelligent agents to secure networks
- Formal verification of encryption-based security in cloud systems
- Human activity recognition from monocular video

Applications are invited from well-qualified graduates who can demonstrate the
potential to become a high quality researcher. Those holding degrees from
British universities should normally have at least an upper second-class honours
degree (a lower second class honours degree plus a Masters degree is also
acceptable) in a relevant subject.

The studentship comprises an annual maintenance grant, which for 2012-2013 is
£13,590, together with full payment by the University of its UK/EU student
tuition fees. You will register on a full-time basis starting in September 2012
(or, exceptionally, earlier). A successful applicant who does not meet the UK/EU
eligibility conditions will be him/herself responsible for paying the additional
fees for international students.

Applications should include:

- a full CV including personal details, qualifications, educational history and,
where applicable, any employment or other experience relevant to the application
- contact details of at least two referees able to comment on your academic
performance and suitability for research
- a research proposal of 1,000-1,500 words that identifies which of the above
research areas you are applying for, identifies some of the key issues in that
area, and demonstrates your capability for research

Application deadline: Friday 29th June 2012

Applications should be sent (preferably in a single PDF document) to:

Angela Muscat, Research Administrator, at [log in to unmask]

or by post to her at School of Computing, University of Portsmouth, Lion Gate
Building, Lion Terrace, Portsmouth, PO1 3HE.

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Jim Briggs ([log in to unmask]).
