Science fiction emerged during the height of European colonialism, and is profoundly shaped by it. But what happens, ask Mark Bould (UWE), Rehan Hyder (UWE) and Roger Luckhurst (Birkbeck), if we take seriously the proposal, tentatively offered by LES STATUES MEURENT AUSSI (Chris Marker and Alain Resnais 1953) and LA NOIRE DE... (Ousmane Sembene 1966), to consider such films as works of science fiction? Join us to watch and discuss the films in this light.
Roger Luckhurst is interested in looking at different kinds of sf that emerge in spaces outside genre texts, mainly in museums, fine art, photography exhibits and found-footage film works. His forthcoming book, SFnal: Science Fiction in the Expanded Field, will include essays on J.G. Ballard & Bruce Conner, William Gibson & Joseph Cornell, on world exposition spaces, fun fairs, and future ruins, on the artists Ivan & Heather Morison, Suzanne Treister, Dolly Thompsett, Mike Kelley, the architect Rem Koolhaas, and the cinema of David Lynch, Chris Marker, Patrick Keiller and Werner Herzog. His recent books include SCIENCE FICTION (2005), THE TRAUMA QUESTION (2008) and THE MUMMY'S CURSE (2012).
Rehan Hyder researches ethnicity and contemporary identity, with a focus on popular music and youth subcultures. He is the author of BRIMFUL OF ASIS (2004), and he is currently working on issues of race and representation in the colonial horror film.
Mark Bould is founding co-editor of Science Fiction Film and Television. He guest-edited the 'Afrofuturism' special issues of Science Fiction Studies (2007) and is currently editing a special issue of Paradoxa on African sf (2013). His recent books include RED PLANETS: MARXISM AND SCIENCE FICTION (2009), THE ROUTLEDGE CONCISE HISTORY OF SCIENCE FICTION (2011) and THE ROUTLEDGE FILM GUIDEBOOK: SCIENCE FICTION (2012).
