*Chinese Weapons: Warfare, Ritual and Burial in the Bronze Age *
*(c. 1500-500 BC)*
Suitably qualified candidates are invited to apply for a 3 year doctoral
studentship awarded to the University of Oxford and the British Museum
under the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s Collaborative Doctoral
Award scheme in the area of archaeology. The studentship will start in
October 2012.
This three-year doctoral studentship will examine the role of weaponry
in bronze production and military use over the period; investigate the
balance in production, use and deposition in tombs and hoards of weapons
and bronze ritual vessels; to what extent jade versions of bronze
weapons reveal the significance of weapons in Shang and Zhou society.
The studentship provides a unique opportunity to work directly with the
large Chinese weapon collection in the British Museum.
Supervision will be provided jointly by Professor Jessica Rawson, School
of Archaeology, University of Oxford and Dr Sascha Priewe of the Asian
Department of the British Museum. The D.Phil degree will be awarded by
the University of Oxford.
The award pays fees and an annual maintenance grant (currently £14,140
per year) for 3 years. In addition, The British Museum will contribute
£1,000 per year towards the costs of travel to research at the Museum
and towards other research expenses.
Candidates should have obtained, or be studying for, a Masters Degree in
(Chinese) archaeology or a related discipline, such as history,
anthropology or art history, have an interest in interdisciplinary
research and familiarity with using artefacts as historical sources. The
student will also have a working knowledge of modern Chinese. The usual
