The Drama Department at Royal Holloway, University of London and the Theatre & Performance department at the V&A have been awarded an AHRC collaborative doctoral award:
'Private Passions, Public Archive: Approaches to the private collector and the private collection in public theatre archives'.
The project will be supervised by Dr Gilli Bush-Bailey, in collaboration with Dr Kate Dorney, at the V&A. This collaborative doctoral research project is inspired by Royal Holloway’s recent acquisition of the Roy Waters Theatre Collection, which now significantly extends Royal Holloway’s theatre and performance holdings, but will also engage with the history and practice of the founder of the V&A’s theatre holdings, Gabrielle Enthoven. The research will extend to other collections that add to an investigation of the idiosyncratic interests of the individual collector, his/her theatre passions, aversions, social status and geographical position, and formulate a thesis that investigates the significance and role of such collections, the nature of the collection, and how these inflect and affect the archive that is available to the contemporary researcher.
Applicants with a background in museums, libraries and archives are encouraged to apply.
Closing date for application: 30th July 2012
