Subject: Born in 1987: The Animated GIF
Dear colleagues,
I am writing to draw your attention to an exhibition which you and your students may be interested in.
The Photographers' Gallery has launched its new digital programme with Born in 1987: The Animated GIF, an exhibition devoted to this overlooked image format native to the web and the computer screen undergoing a creative renaissance.
The exhibition features over 40 animated GIFs by practitioners from a range of creative disciplines. For many, this was their first opportunity to experiment with the medium. The resulting submissions have been published online (http://joyofgif.tumblr.com) and are also displayed on The Wall, a 2.7 x 3m Sharp Video Wall located on the ground floor of our gallery in Ramillies Street, London. Essays by Daniel Rubinstein and Matthew Fuller accompany the gifs online.
From 17th June, these works will be joined by a rotating selection of submissions from the public, updated on a daily basis.
If you or your students are interested in contributing, you can find information on how to submit at: http://joyofgif.tumblr.com/submityourgif
The initial gifmakers include: Marie-Josiane Agossou, Kim Asendorf, Michele Barker and Anna Munster, David Bate, Nicolas Boillot, James Bridle, Laura Brothers, Susan Collins, Andrew Dewdney, Jessica Eaton, Nooshin Farhid, Paul Flannery, Emilio Gomariz, Dryden Goodwin, Sean Hillen, JocJonJosch, Roshini Kempadoo, Olia Lialina, Dave Lewis, Rollin Leonard, Eileen Little, Victoria Blitz & Mute Magazine, Ohio Magazine, Jamie Martinez, Simone Massera, Sally McKay, Wendy McMurdo, Marcel Meyer, Lorna Mills, Kennard Phillips, Colin Raff, Ryder Ripps, Paula Roush, Andreas Schmidt, Rick Silva, Yoshi Sodeoka, Phillip Stearns, Eva Stenram, Katja Stuke, Spirit Surfers, David Szakaly, Jordan Tate, Penelope Umbrico, Giulietta Verdon-Roe, Alexa Wright
Best wishes
