Three Post-Doc positions in Molecular/Genetic Epidemiology : Copenhagen, Denmark
The Department of Epidemiology Research, Statens Serum Institut (SSI), Copenhagen, Denmark (www.epidemiology.eu) together with the Oak Foundation (www.oakfnd.org) announces a new funding opportunity that will support highly motivated young researchers to investigate diseases related to genetic background as well as exposures during foetal life and/or in the first years of life by combining epidemiology and laboratory methods.
DESCRIPTION
Valuable resources such as population-based biobanks, electronic medical records, health registers, large cohort studies with environmental exposure data, and genomic data from existing genome-wide association and sequencing studies are increasingly becoming available for research in Denmark and elsewhere. Integrating the information from such resources holds great promise for studies with major impact on our understanding of disease causality and pathogenesis.
The goal of this funding opportunity is to provide support for innovative and ambitious research projects aiming for ground-breaking research that enhances our knowledge about environmental and/or genetic causes of diseases and their interplay. Specific study goals could be improvements in prevention or diagnosis, as well as personalized treatment of diseases. Studies should be designed to combine large population-based data sets from multiple complementary resources. An overview of possible data resources can be found at www.epidemiology.eu . Applicants who can incorporate corresponding data from elsewhere are welcome.
We encourage projects aimed at tackling important research questions taking advantage of already existing infrastructures that make studies possible that would otherwise be prohibitively difficult or costly to address. The studies should be performed based on the newest methodologies and technologies in the field and the results should have great chances to improve our understanding of how to prevent and treat diseases.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have received a doctoral degree in epidemiology, statistical or population genetics, bioinformatics or a related field by the start date of the grant, September or October 2012. Successful applicants should be enthusiastic and self-motivated with excellent track records in their field and with research experience in analysis of large genetic or epidemiological datasets. Ideal candidates will also be experienced in collaborating with scientists from other disciplines, will be fluent in English, and will have good interpersonal and communication skills.
In return we offer good opportunities to further your scientific career in a strong research environment with exceptional data from Danish national health registers and large biobanks. We emphasize collaboration between researchers and value a positive working environment.
AWARDS
Fellows will be awarded a three to four-year grant of up to £70K annually depending on qualifications.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
All applications for the positions should include:
• information on the applicant (contact information, current curriculum vitae with list of publications);
