GENRE BEYOND HOLLYWOOD, University of Southampton, 8th July 2012
The aim of this conference is to investigate genre theory in European and World cinema contexts. Film genres, regardless of their points of origin (geographically, culturally, or theoretically), are always subject to a multitude of influences; this hybridity not only results in the shaping and reshaping of existing genres but also in the emergence of new ones. This conference wants to investigate what happens when genre theory, which has been developed mainly in response to dominant Hollywood paradigms, is applied to non-Hollywood cinema industries of the world.
Alongside concepts of authorship, gender and national identity, genre has been one of the main categories within film studies to make sense of cinematic texts and their reception among audiences. This conference offers an opportunity to postgraduates and early career researchers to extend the borders of genre theory beyond Hollywood. Our event takes into consideration theoretical and methodological challenges, as well as geographical, cultural, political and economic implications.
