Dear Charlie
Thank you - that is very informative. I have notified via
http://dx.doi.org/10.1023 but I don't get a report back if/when it is
fixed, so therefore it seems a little as if you are sending
notifications into a black hole. I will follow up the ones I have
submitted. I would be tempted to go the direct route (although that also
may be a black hole).
Thank you - I understand the process so much better now. Always a
comfort...:)
Linda

Subject: Re: [lis-e-resources] DOIs for in press articles
Hi Linda,
As a rule of thumb, if a DOI has been made publicly available, it
should have been registered (e.g. with CrossRef) and should therefore
resolve. If the article is still in the production process, it's
possible that it will have a DOI and that this will have been shared
with the author prior to its registration (perhaps to enable better
tracking of the article through the production process). However, in
such a scenario, the window during which the DOI exists but has not
been registered should be narrow, and the author should have been made
aware that the DOI is not yet registered and therefore won't resolve
until the article is published (in some capacity).
The more likely scenario (in my experience) is that the article *has*
been published, but the DOI has not been registered. This is typically
due to a glitch in the submission process, preventing the DOI either
from being submitted by the publisher or from being registered by the
registration agency.
Publishers do get reports of failed submissions, and indeed of failed
attempts to resolve DOIs that have their DOI prefix (the 10.xxxx bit),
but I don't think all are that diligent in monitoring these reports
and checking / fixing DOIs that have failed to resolve, so it's
probably more effective to contact them directly - perhaps via the
author's editorial contact, or general customer service teams should
know the right person to forward it on to. (Who have you tried
reporting to thus far?)
I'm sure others will be able to furnish you with other experiences /
answers but hope this helps in the meantime.
all the best,
Charlie.

Dear all
This may be a slightly naive question, but I am currently assisting
academics to add details of their publications to an institutional
repository. However for some articles the DOI does not resolve, even
though it is entered as listed on the publisher's website.
I have reported these but yet to hear back why there is a problem. Could
this be because the articles have not been published yet? I have come
across a few of this type.

Linda
