With respect, Toby, the additional expense incurred in offering a London Living Wage for this particular position could surely be offset by savings in other areas. The point I made earlier about management structures and wage distribution stands.
Upping the wage offer for this position would set a good moral example, and provide positive PR for the British Science Association. Please consider doing so.

However we feel that it can still offer an attractive prospect to someone just entering the field, or looking for a complete career change. The timings also mean it would work very well for a student in their summer holidays, and the experience it provides for someone completely new to the field is a benefit above other available minimum-wage work. For the future though we will look at the feasibility of offering positions at the London living wage.
