INVITATION TO ATTEND WORKSHOP

The AHRC/EPSRC/JISC funded project Purcell Plus is holding a workshop
on the Purcell Fantazias and their context at Goldsmiths' College on
Monday 25 June.

The workshop is intended to introduce and explore techniques and
concepts around using software tools in the study of musical
materials. We will take Purcell's Fantazias and In Nomines as our
principal object of study but will also take in works and historical
figures from around the time and place of the Fantazias. We will have
available numerous recordings of the works, digitised scores, and
scans of manuscripts; the day will comprise demonstrations of and
experimentation with software tools for studying this material. There
will also be ample opportunity for discussion of the works and of
issues arising from experiments with the software.

The workshop is being held as part of the case studies component of
Richard Lewis's Ph.D. His doctoral project is exploring computer
technology use in music studies. The outcomes and discussion of the
workshop will be analysed in his thesis.

The day has been organised in conjunction with a day conference
centred around the launch of the British Library's digitisation of
their holdings of Purcell autographs, include MS Add. 30930, the
manuscript in which the Fantazias and In Nomines are found. This
conference is being held at the British Library on the day after our
workshop, Tuesday 26 June. Details will be issued shortly.

There will be no charge for attending the workshop, however places are
limited, so please reply by email to Richard Lewis
<[log in to unmask]> if you'd like to book a place.
