CALL FOR PAPERS (English version below)

Bangor University
School of Modern Languages

17-19 Settembre 2012

Organizzatori: Claudio Brancaleoni (Perugia); Laura Rorato (Bangor);
Fabrizio Scrivano (Perugia)

protagonisti dell’epoca in opere prodotte in quegli stessi anni.

Lezioni magistrali: Nanni Balestrini; Franco Petroni; Ruth Glynn (Bristol)

colazione.

Cena di gala: £30

A Multifaceted Decade of Protest in Italy: 1968-1978 Between Myth and
Reality

17-19 Septembr 2012

Organiziers: Claucio Brancaleoni (Perugia); Laura Rorato (Bangor);
Fabrizio Scrivano (Perugia)

In the appendix to a collection of extracts from the journal Quindici
edited by Nanni Balestrini and published on the occasion of the
journal’s 40th anniversary, Andrea Cortellessa declared that ‘the
impression one has when looking at 1968 with hindsight is that form the
start it was a myth’ (p.451) and since, as Cortellessa himself
maintains, the life of a myth manifests itself in its representations,
this conference intends to analyse:

1. How this “myth” manifested itself in the cultural production
(literature, cinema, music, theatre, diaries and autobiographical texts)
of the protagonists of those years in works produced during that period.
2. How the values and ideals of those years are seen today by those
who played an active role during the decade 1968-78.
3. How 1968 is seen by those who, to use the words of Montanari’s
anthology, were not yet born (or were too young) at that time.
4. The role played by women and by their cultural production in those
years.
5. The relationship between protest movements and terrorism.

In a recent volume entitled “Vogliamo Tutto” (2012) the historian Angelo
Ventrone pointed out how one of the main problems in engaging with ’68
is that debates seem to get stuck on two antithetical positions. On the
one hand we have people who still believe in the ideas and values of
those years whilst others view ’68 as the origin of all evils in
contemporary Italy (we just need to think of publications like
Perniola’s pamphlet Berlusconi come la realizzazione del ’68: Perché? or
Valerio Margrelli’s Il Sessantotto realizzato da Mediaset). Juxtaposing
contemporary and recent works, this conference intends to offer an image
as varied as possible of what is undoubtedly one of the most contested
historical periods not only in Italy but also in most of Europe.

Keynote speakers: Franco Petroni; Nanni Balestrini; Ruth Glynn (Bristol)

Proposals for 20-minute papers in Italian or English should include an
abstract (min.500/max.1500 characters including spaces) and a brief
biography and should be sent to one of the organizers not later than 18
May 2012. Prospective speakers will be notified of the outcome of their
proposals by 31 May 2012. The deadline for registering for the
conference is 22 June 2012.

Registration fee: £50 (£20 for students or unwaged scholars)
Accommodation: £30 per person per night on a B&B basis; £20 room only.
Conference dinner: £30
